Following are some details relating to Zalischiki, told to me by my late
father Moshe -
Sometime during the autumn of 1941, after the Romanians ordered the
expulsion of Jews from Czernowitz across the Dniester River into German
occupied Poland and to almost certain death, my mother Rosa, my sister Mia
and grandmother Bathsheva (Sheive) were in a group of Jews that reached the
small resort town of Zalishchiki. Half of its population was Jewish. The
Czernowitz Jews were herded into the local ghetto. One morning, the Germans
ordered all women to come out of the ghetto with brooms, pails and other
utensils with which to clean a large building. Rosa wanted to go, but her
mother insisted that Rosa stay with Mia and that she would go. She went and
never returned. The Germans murdered all the women. From Zalischiki, Rosa
and Mia were expelled or escaped to Melnica and from there to the ghetto of
Borschow.
Rosa and Mia survived but that is another story.
>From CZ I passed through Zalischiki on the way to Borschow and Wolkowce (my
father's birthplace) during a trip to the area in the summer of 2008. There
was not much to see of what was in the past considered to be a nice resort
on the banks of the Dniester.
