Czernowitzers and/or Art Lovers...

On 20.04.2011, the 41st anniversary of Paul Celan's death, I've opened the first solo exhibition "SCHWARZE MILCH - BLACK MILK...",

dedicated to Paul Celan and to the artistic realization for his most popular poem "Todesfuge - Deathfugue". The exhibition will be online through end of November 2011. Thanks to Irene Fishler's excellent research in the Romanian Academy Library in Bucharest, I'm pleased (and proud) to present now the very first publication of the poem to you. It's in Romanian language and was released by the Romanian newspaper "Contemporanul" on 02.05.1947:

Please note the most interesting preliminary remark to the publication: "The poem - which translation we are publishing - is based on a real occurrence. In Lublin as in many other "Nazi death camps", some of the prisoners were forced to play longing music while the rest of the prisoners were digging graves."

The exhibition covers translations of "Todesfuge" in ten different languages, including the English translation by John Felstiner. That's an authorized, but however very unconventional translation, as noted by Joyce and others. Therefore I've added Michael Hamburger's more explicit English translation at:

Enjoy the diversity of artistical expressions and have an amazing week!
