Hi Karen,

I assume you know about your grandfather's family going forward in time,
and you're asking about the family origins in Czernowitz? Edgar Hauster
and Martina Lelgemann transcribed several Czernowitz address directories
from 1898 through 1936. They are available in the "databases" section of
our group website <http://czernowitz.ehpes.com>. In the 1936 directory,
there is a listing for "Oto Schachter", living at Petre Liciu and
profession "Dr. medic". Would this be your great grandfather?

You might obtain further information in the earlier address directories,
or through the vital records available via the LDS Family History
libraries. Check this website for resources for researching your Bukovina

By the way, I also have Schachter family connections in Bukovina - but
none in this family were medical doctors - just ran simple horse-taxi
services and salesmen.
