Hello MimI and everybody else.
It was not only during the sixties. It was a fact of life and we all (Jews and non Jews ) learned to live with it.
It was common knowledge that no Jews will be accepted in the School of Medicine , even though the rector had Jewish friends and was not an anti-semite himself. The joke was that every successful boss needed a Jewish deputy. The government line was like everywhere in USSR. 1 % of Jews to be accepted into the Institutions of higher learning. Why do you think so many of the brightest kids went to study in Novosibirsk and other far removed places where there would be less Jewish children applying? I
And despite of all of this the pride of being Jewish and commitment to Judaism was very strong among my contemporaries, though the temptation to assimilate was always there.
I love the information and exchanges.
as a holocaust educator I find it fascinating. as a Czernowitzer I enjoy the Chochmat Hayim
Shabbat Shalom

Channa
