Thank you Peter for this piece of information. I too, had heard or
read the story,
but could not remember the details. If in 1847, there was in Czernowitz
a "Hotel de Moldavie", this seems to indicate that at that time, the
Romanian influence
was strong in Czernowitz.
In 1847 the total population of Czernowitz must have been quite small.
twenty two years later, in 1869, the total population, including the
suburbs Horecza,
Kaliczanka, Klokuczka, Rosch and Manasteryska was 33884.
Out of curiosity: are there any members of the list who know
definitely that some
of their ancestors already lived in Czernowitz itself at that time?
The first of mine, did not arrive till 1879 or 1880.
