Hello Stephen!
My grandfather's brother Joseph Turtel (also from Cernowitz) was married to
Fanny Gronich. Do you know something more about the Gronich family? Asher
Turtel.

Subject: [Cz-L] Trip conclusion

We spent half of Friday touring Lviv with Sergei. In addition to general
historical sites we saw the boundaries of the Jewish ghetto, the sites of
former synagogues which were blown up, the round-up site for Jews by the
Nazis, the little spoken of 'concentration camp", the Jewish hospital, and
today's functioning synagogue. We saw the "Golden Rose" restaurant. Not
being a fan of ethnic humor, I find the restaurant to be in poor taste and
insensitive, but I will let others judge for themselves.
Friday afternoon we arrived in Vienna and I attended service at the Shtadt
Temple in the evening . In addition to local and Israeli security there
were large numbers of riot police in very unsettling attire. There had been
violence, including lots of store front broken glass triggered by German
tourists observing the Austrian-German soccer match. This scene was quite
dramatic and disturbing.
My primary objective was to visit and clean the grave of my great
grandfather, Israel Gronich, who died suddenly, at a relatively young age,
in 1917. He was a devout follower of the Sadagora Rebbe and had come from
Czernowitz to Vienna to help manage his possessions during WWI. He
apparently was very close with him. I hope one day to be able to learn more
details of this relationship.
While here I did visit the Schonbrun and tour a bit in the center of town,
learning yet more of the Hapsburgs and how the Jews interacted with their
reign. I was pleased to see the admission of the local population's
unqualified guilt, written on the wall of a building at the Judenplatz for
their actions during the holocaust.
I have interesting photos and videos of Czernowitz, some which I will try to
share gradually.
Unfortunately every effort to attach one results in the following being
bounced back to me.

If any one has an idea regarding how I should attach photos to avoid this
porblem please let me know. I am trying to attach them as JPEGs.
[Stephen... If you are trying to send pictures to the group email address,
It cannot be done -- you can't send attachments of any kind to the list --
the
software won't accept it. You can send them romers_at_shaw.ca and I will post
them
to the website, but if you have many, it's probably better to wait until you
get
home. --moderator jerome]
