Dear Czernowitzer.
After reading all of you comments few things came to mind.
1. Concerning the "Ukrainian" memorial.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but nowhere are the Ukrainians mentioned. This is a memorial for the fallen soldiers that is typical for every place in USSR, just like you will find memorials all over US and other countries. And it implies to everybody who served in the Army, Jews included. The fact that anti-semites will tell that Jews were fighting in Tashkent (implying they were cowards) is another story.
2. I do agree with Cornel and other who wrote that since the existing memorial is a done deal, there is no point to criticize and discuss it forever.
3. That said, the fact that so many of us (survivors, second and even third generations of Czernowithzer born in Czernowitz or far away) felt so strong about the lack of a real commemoration so much deserved by the innocent victims and the very unique Jewish Community of Czernowitz means that all of us have the need to do something about it.
So here what I propose (just brainstorming. Feel free to discharge all of them).
There are all kind of memorials and not all of them are maid of stone. Remember, that's why we name our children in memory of our ancestors so their memory will live on. (Ops, not anymore)
For me personally the exchanges on this list is a memorial. The video of the Czernowitzer Ghetto is a memorial.
The cookbook is a memorial.
So, we can combine all of the projects together and create a movie about Czernowitz and distribute it (PBS, Holocaust education???)
Starting with the creation of this site. That's where we put the typical Jewish Czernowitzer house. That's were we show the people who lived there. That were you talk about the Austria - Jewish Community relation. You have the school that was given by the Keiser to the Jewish Communities and were Freud's cousin taught science. You have the famous Bukovinian Jews and much, much more. It could be that bringing the filming crew to Czernowitz, would be the best persuading to commemorate the Ghetto in a more meaningful way. There are so many interesting things that I, who lived in Czernowitz, learned just in the last three months (certain "sad" things were kept away from children)
I know this list has very capable, incredibly intelligent and dedicated people with expertise in about every aspect, including movie production. I am sure that we get can help from the US Holocaust museum and the Shoah foundation in some way. What do we have to loose?
????????????????????????????????????????????????
Another idea (more practical) is to purchase a couple of plots in the cemetery and erect a monument like the one in Donezk. It is very impressive and dignified. With very few words it says it all.
Hope i did not bore you to death
I am sure there are some misspellings, but it's my trademark
Hag shavuot sameach. Perfect occasion for Cheese Strudel and Schmettentorte.
