Czernowitzers...

Arnold Schwarz notes in his editorial article of the 23.07.1933/2011 edition of "Der Tag - The Day", headed "Maccabiah Games Definitively Cancelled", available at

http://czernowitzdaily.blogspot.com/

as follows: "...this interdiction from Bucharest is like a bolt from the blue and destroys confidence, expectations, hope and offends our feelings and sentiments - even the last chance in this depressing summer is taken away: now finally we are kaput."

In fact, under pressure of nationalistic and antisemitic political parties, the Romanian Government interdicted the Maccabiah Games only two weeks before their official opening. Therefore it's evident, that "Der Tag" enumerates (see pages 1, 2, 8) some of the damages caused by this arbitrary measure to Czernowitz:

- Disinvitation of overseas visitors (2,000 Poland, 300 Czechoslovakia, 100 Palestine, 200 Bulgaria, 400 Austria, 50 France, 50 England, 1,000 Romania).
- Cancellation of all hotel bookings.
- Cancellation of 1,200 booked homestays.
- Senseless adaptation of the Maccabiah Stadium for 15,000 visitors.

Due to this truthful, but critical coverage, "Der Tag" fell victim to the military censors and was banned until end of July 1933. Therefore, dear Czernowitzers and/or "Der Tag" readers, next edition will be on August 1st, 1933/2011!
