[Cz-L]Joseph Schmidt's First and Only Charity Concert in Czernowitz!

On the occasion of the High Holy Days, September 1933, Joseph Schmidt sojourned with his family in Czernowitz. He gave a charity concert in favor of the Jewish Hospital (at that time under the direction of Dr. Josef Ohrenstein, the great grandfather of our new fellow member Rob Gartenberg from Brussels). As we learn from the editorial article (p. 1) of "tommorow's" edition of "Der Tag",

it was Joseph Schmidt's first and only appearance in Czernowitz since he became a worldwide recognized tenor, featuring his 1933 movie "Ein Lied geht um die Welt". Enjoy a short video clip from that movie and the illustrated newspaper advertisement at our Ehpes.com Blog:

The concert took place on 14.09.1933, at 8:30 PM, at the "Musikvereinssaal" and was broadcasted - WITH REGARD TO THE GREAT DEMAND WHICH IS TO BE EXPECTED AND FOR POOR PEOPLE - by the means loudspeakers to the Great Hall in the Jewish House. Less than three months later, in December 1933, Joseph Schmidt had to flee from Nazi persecution to Vienna.
