"Zwinter" is the Ukrainian word for graveyard. Occasionally also used
in Yiddish. I prefer "Beit Oylem" meaning the home of the world, or the
people.
But more important, the situation at the Jewish cemetery in Chernivtsi, our
beloved "Czernowitz", is not completely as described by Hardy.
1. The annual growth of the vegetation at the cemetery continues unhindered.
The solution is to mow all the paths, twice a month during the summer.
The areas of the graves, need to be sprayed with herbicides once a year.
2. Fund raising resources have NOT gone dry.
3. Donator platform NOT too narrow. The Czernowitz-List has about 300
members, less than 90 are contributors to CJCRO. Shame on all who can
afford to and are not contributing, shall I tell you who they are?
4. Hardy is correct. Would anyone like to move to Chernivtsi and take on
this job for "Luft und Liebe" (air and love, meaning without pay).
5. draw your own conclusions.
6. Some Jewish locals ARE involved, even some non Jewish locals are
involved positively. Others have lived so long under the soviet system,
that they do not understand public generosity, civic duties and Jewish
values.
7. Correct but in the process of being changed.
8. True. Explanation: Josef Zissels would like the whole cemetery to be
covered with concrete. If you tend to agree, come up with the funds for
covering 11.6 hectares with a layer of concrete at least 12cm thick.
9. We are grateful to the volunteers and appreciate their work, even though
it will not solve the problem of the restoration and maintenance of
the cemetery.
10. Where do we go from here?
We do what seems best and possible, at any given time.
We do not give up, we do not give in.
In the end we will prevail.
