I have seen large synagogues in Polish villages (with no Jews left in them
such as I think Losiche) turned into public municipal libraries, while
conserving the Bama, the steps and wall of the Aron and the balconies of the
women's sections and all the Jewish signs in front of the building and on
the windows.
Interestingly, I visited the Kuchin area in southern India recently and
found the local government engaged in massive preservation efforts of the
long abandoned (and quite trashed) synagogues in the villages, where a
Jewish community was once thriving.
I should have pictures of both efforts if people are interested
