Rationing.
During the war there were shortages in staples.
Bread was rationed.
For the allocated daily ration we had stamps ,issued
by the authorities.
In exchange of these stamps the bakeries would get
flour from the stores.
Handling loose stamps in big quantities was a very clumsy affair-
sorting and counting - so they issued printed sheets of bristol
for these stamps to be glued onto on the predesigned rectangles.
The bakeries didnt have the people to deal with this so they gave
them out to do the glueing.
So my mother became a subcontractor.
They didnt pay much but there was no other income and
every penny was needed.
We , the children helped out , we actually did all the glueing.
As glue we used egg whites or flour glue.
As a brush we took chicken feathers .
With the persistence of little children we glued them stamps in
position on them sheets hour after hour .
Our sheets were the finest of the street...
