In my understanding this still was in fact the Choral Synagogue, referred to by "Der Tag" as "Alte Chorschule" and by the Czernowitz Jewish Museum as "Choral 'Beit-Ares' Synagogue", located on Mickiewiczgasse, a street name, which never changed:

"In 1949 there were six synagogues functioning regularly. Except for one, all were closed by the authorities in the 1950s, and the Torah scrolls were removed to the municipal museum. In 1970 there was a small synagogue left open with seats for 50–60 people. In 1952 the Choral Synagogue was converted into a sports club, and the Reform Temple was converted into a movie theater; two other synagogues were converted into a mechanical workshop and a storehouse."

In addition Abraham Kogan wrote to me:

"I don't know who invented the term "alte". Any reference to that synagogue
among people who knew or heard about Pinie Spektor was "die Khor Shil". I
was there, even before I joined the choir, as a soprano.

On the holidays, among the Hassidim of various Czernowitzer Rebbes, it
became almost a tradition to go to the Khor Shil to enjoy the wonderful
melodies. Pinie Spektor was quite a religious musical personality. My late
father and many of his friends used to take there their whole family."

On the other hand, Cornel, I think, your reference

could be the only consistent explanation for the term "Alte" in "Alte Chorschule" and would be in line with David's and Abraham's recollection.

An interesting Passover puzzle, isn't it?
