I fully agree with Yosef, to me always Jerry, with whom I played
"Halt die Haende hoch du schaebiger Jude"(Hold you hands up
you shabby Jew) when I was four or five years old.
We made fun of anyone who spoke German badly, even though
we ourselves, did not speak it all that well. Anyone from Besarabia,
Poland
or the main part of Romania, was not up to snuff as far as we were
concerned.
And the local Ukrainians were Ruthenians. There was a Ruthenian
national party,
with Dr. Zalozietcki at its head. Ruthenian is a Ukrainian dialect of
the western part
of the Ukraine and contains many Polish words.
We said " szin dobreh for good morning, now in Chernivtsi they say:
Dobre den.
