It seems bizarre to observe the intense pre-occupation with hymns of royal
allegiance or architectural detail of the town. Any one who has read
"Shadows of the Past" by Marianne Hirsch could not fail to be abhorred at the s
ystematic destruction of our brethren by the Nazis, Roumanians and Russians
in a town where some 30.000 people once lived and that was about one third
of the total population. It is only recently that the "Roumanian Shoah"
received some attentioon and publicity and previously "Geschichte der Juden
der Bukovina" devoted two massive volumes which detailed the tragedy of
the town the Jews cannot forget. Thus, for example no mention,it seems, of
the brief and rather insignificant rule of the Jewish communist Anna Pauker.
The few remaining of us who lost their nearest and dearest deported to
Transnistria or from Hungary to Terezin somehow are now in a minority. Harry
