Dear Czernowitzers,

If you plan to visit the Jewish cemetery in Czernowitz/Chernivtsi,
Please take with you a copy of the official map of the cemetery and
Also the map which shows both the current numbers of the various burial
areas, as well as the numbers of these areas, as they were before the Soviet
time starting in 1944-1945.
Both maps are available on the Ehpes website at:
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/
Once you have accessed Ehpes, go to:
The Czernowitz Jewish Cemetery",
the two maps are:
 "The official Cemetery Map" and
"Bruce Reisch's map of the new areas vs. the old parcels".

[Here are the direct links to the maps Mimi speaks of:

In the cemetery itself there are no indicators or markers identifying
the various areas. We also do not know what the plot numbering system
used to be.
Therefore the only way to find a grave you are looking for, is to identify
the number of the area in which it is located on the map, then find the
appropriate area in the cemetery and then walk through that area, row by
row, stone by stone, till you find the grave you are looking for.
The size of most areas is only about 20meter by 20 meter.

The Hebrew inscriptions are usually on the side of the tombstone facing
east. In this case toward Zelena street.
If you are looking for a very old grave, know the Hebrew year in which
the person died, or take a date-conversion chart with you. Many of the old
graves have only a Hebrew inscription.
Wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt. Among the annual weeds
which grow in the cemetery, there are burning nettles, to which most people
have an allergic reaction.

If you take photographs of a particular grave, please also take photographs
of the adjacent graves, so that we have a record of their location, which
may help another person who is looking for the grave of relatives.

Mimi
