[Cz-L] post memory

[And of course Rodney Dangerfield was born in Czernowitz -- right?? Or
do we drift? ]

I don't know about post-memory but I just discovered a new type of memory I'm calling 'ego-memory' which is recalling something that happened to somebody else but convincing oneself that it happened to yourself.  One day in the 1980s I was having a bite with my younger son in a popular deli in Los Angeles which, at the time, was practically empty. 

I still smoked in those days and was having a cigarette with my coffee when in walked a familiar face.  I did a double take and recognized him.  It was the comedian Rodney Dangerfield who used to do those routines about nobody having respect for him.  Rodney came to our table as if we were old friends and said, "Hey, buddy, you got a cigarette?"  I said sure, gave him a cigarette; he lit up, thanked me and walked off.

My son told a friend of his about this incident. His friend was an obnoxious egotist who was impressed by this since celebrities were his gods.  Several years later, this self-filled jerk said to my son, "Remember the time in that deli when Rodney Dangerfield came to our table to bum a cigarette?"  The kid had convinced himself he had been there. My son reminded him that he was never there.  I'm surprised the kid never became a politician.
