Dear Miha,

Trajan Popovici was the mayor of Czernowitz when the Romanians took over in
1941 and he succeeded to persuade the authorities to refrain from
deportation of around 20,000 Jews who were to maintain the industry and
services in the city. You will find info about this both at the Ehpes
website and in Wikipedia (google Trajan Popovici).

As to "deportation of Jews from Bessarabia to Transnistria" google this
phrase as well - see for instance

The writer Apelfeld composed two volumes (in Hebrew - maybe they were
translated) about this deportation.
