The situation Abraham describes is a well known local joke
on the abuse of the German language used by the locals.
For a policeman the official German language was compulsory
but the vocabulary was lean and Ruthanian substitutes filled
in.
Everybody understood perfectly but it was an object of mockery
for us who considered ourselves masters of the German tongue.
What the policeman says , trying to keep the traffic flowing is :
" Either ( Ukr) you move , either(Ukr) you stand , but make no heaps
(Ukr)."
The original sounds funny.
The translation does not.
