Recent postings about the vigorous Romanization actions in the twenties
and thirties recalled some personal experiences.
My father, Dr. Artur Schneider, was a medical doctor in Wiznitz, near
Czernowitz. A graduate of the University of Vienna and a medical officer in
the Austrian K.u.K. Regiment No. 41 during WWI, his knowledge of Romanian
was quite sparse. He was appointed as a district doctor for the state
medical services (Krankenkasse) and he also was instrumental in organizing
the medical services for the gov't railroad system (CFR). The knowledge of
Romanian I had acquired in grammar school was of some help in preparing his
medical reports (e.g. I once caught his description of "a wound at the back
of the head" as "o rana pe capul de indarat" and promptly corrected it.)
Around 1936, he had to submit to a language examination that he failed and
was dismissed from the Krankenkasse position. He kept the position with the
CFR until he died in 1938, and my stepmother and I were awarded gov't
pensions in recognition of his contributions. In 1941, based on our
classification as "pensionari de stat" (state retirees), we received a
coveted Calotescu authorization that exempted us from deportation to
Transnistria which probably contributed to our survival.
