Muniu or Munju was the diminutive of Emanuel.
My father had another friend called Muniu Schachter.
In Czernowitz, most people were called either by diminutive names,
So that Herbert became "Berti", Josef became "Jusiu", Oskar became "Ossi"
and so on, or those people of higher standing, or those, one was not
familiar with, were referred to by their surnames with the article in front,
such as: "die Samet" for Dr. Samet, "die Chajes" for the wife of Dr. Chajes.

In high-school the students were addressed by their teachers, by their
surnames, consequently the students, even many years after graduating
still called each other by their surnames. This is how I remember my
father's friends: Segal, Hermelin, Gottesmann and Schmetterling.
Among my uncle's friends there was one who's name was Rauch and because
he was short and chubby, he was called "Baucherl", "Bauch", meaning belly,
Rhyming with "Rauch".
