Last week we saw the New England Premiere of Hava Nagila (The Movie, 2011, =
73 min.) at the Boston Jewish Film Festival. The scr eening took place at t=
he Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.=20

The blurb: The ubiquitous Hava Nagila is ingrained in people=E2=80=99s cons=
ciousness worldwide. Everyone from Belafonte to Dylan to Elvis to Chubby Ch=
ecker sang it. This charming and entertaining documentary directed by Rober=
ta Grossman uncovers Hava=E2=80=99s complex history=E2=80=94the bouncy melo=
dy which originated in the Shtetls of the Ukraine, the lyrics later added i=
n Palestine, and the joyful dance done at almost every Jewish wedding on ea=
rth. With cameos by Leonard Nimoy, Regina Spektor, Connie Francis, Glen Cam=
pbell.=20

A discussion with the director followed the screening. She had visited Czer=
nowitz while filming at the Sadagora synagogue. Our own Needham's (Massachu=
setts) 2012 Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman, who performs her gymnastic r=
outines to the sounds of Hava Nagila, recorded a greeting. She could not at=
tend in person beca use she appeared the next morning on the NBC show.=20
