I couldn't help smiling when after reading Mimi's encounter
with the Italian-Jewish woman. It reminded me of a similar
incident around 1950, when I started working for an import-export
company in New York. Ilsa, a young German-Jewish refugee who
worked there as a translator asked me if I spoke German. I told her
I couldn't speak that language but could sing some German songs.
With her encouragement,.I sang "Zwei Herzen im Drievierteltakt"
which my Czernowitz-born father had taught me.

When I finished, she said, "You sang that song with an Austrian
accent." The reason that incident is still so vivid for me after more than
half a century is because of the disdain in Ilsa's tone.

I once met an American woman in Italy. We were not introduced,
but soon discovered that we were both Jewish and European.
I asked her where she was from, she told me that she was from Poland
and immediately said: You are from the Bukovina.
I answered: Yes, from Czernowitz. To this she said: Ahhhhhhh!

Make what you want of this,

Mimi
