In answer to Hardy's question about the language the Jewish residents
of Chernivtsi speak currently: Mostly they speak Ukrainian or Russian.
Unfortunately I know only a few words of each of these languages
and therefore cannot distinguish one from the other.
About 10% - 20% know Yiddish, but do not speak it amongst themselves.
In all the years I have been visiting Chernivtsi, I have met only 3
people,
who are the remnants of the German speaking Jewish population.
In the Jewish school they teach Ukrainian, Hebrew and English.
Possibly they also teach other languages.
Among the whole population of Chernivtsi it is possible to find people
who speak many different European languages. I have encountered
people, who in addition to Ukrainian and Russian, speak: German, Polish,
Romanian, Hebrew, French and Italian.
