I have visited. with my former classmates and we all had an opportunity to
compare.

The once well kept internal courtyards are overgrown, residential buildings
are crumbling (yes, they are!), the roads are plainly dangerous and the
airport and the train system are inadequate. Not to mention lack of
employment and villages that became empty of able-bodied people who are
seeking some prosperity overseas.

When I stated that the city is in decline, I was instantly attacked by some
patriotic List members who are over- impressed by the brightly painted
facades of the central buildings. Well, apparently, they are in love (with
the past) and the beauty is in the eye of beholder...

What haven't changed is the initial image of a cosy European city with its
lush parks and beautifully designed buildings and squares.
It's still standing.
