Hi Bruce, Edgar, Ruth, Florence,Hardy, Andy, and all members
in 1941 before leaving the town, they distroyed the electricity-factory, the
water/work, the house in the Postgasse with hundreds of radios, the bridge
over the Pruth, but did not put on fire the town...these are Babske manses..
As a grown up witness of the Russian and German actions 1940/45, I must
tell you an interesting story:
1940-41 the Soviets took 2 rooms of the apartment were lived my grandmother
and mother.and a big boss officer from the "Pojarne Comanda", fire-brigade
, his name was Obochovsky, with his wife occupied the rooms. They were
Jewish.A good friend of us, Ing Norbert Rosenzweig, had no work, so I spoke
to M.Obochovski and he got a job there...On the end of June, hundreds of big
cars with furniture, pianos and big luggage went over the bridge in northern
direction..Thousands of Cz.citizans were there, only with a rucksack, to
tramp with these , in the last days soldiers...in these last cars was also
our friend Norbert with the fire-brigade...what he saw, he related us, after
his returning in the 1960th in Romania...Referro relata: on the road many
women boys were waiting to be taken in one of the cars..there were also
Rosa Wald, a girl than my age,w ho worked with me in the soviet library,
with her mother, and Norbert knew her..So he saw that a car with soldiers
stopped, took Rosa up and her mother remained crying...When the cars arrived
in the Ukraine, they stopped on a field, the soldiers with Rosa went in the
bushes and he heard her crying, than the soldiers returned to the car
without her. If somebody of the members knew her, please contact me...
They continued the way to Kiev, there m.Obochovski took his parents in his
car...After some km, they stopped...and Obochovski, his wife and his parents
were shot...because he took his parents without the permission of the High
commander...
Norbert returned to Germany with his Russian wife, divorced and paid us a
visit in Ploiesti, than he came for a short time to Israel and lived in
Duesseldorf..He died some years ago.
Please, overlook my mistakes
Regards
Hedwig

Dear friends,
The article brought to our attention by Florence is excerpted from the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) News Bulletin dated July 8, 1941
http://pdfs.jta.org/1941/1941-07-08_174.pdf
and it is of course NOT A FACTUAL REPORT, but an interesting contemporary
document. At the peak of WW2 - the Eastern Front, as the largest military
operation in history, started just two weeks earlier, on June 22, 1941 -
it's hardly surprising that not each and any agency report was accurate, but
was in many cases the result of targeted disinformation. However, as a
contemporary document, the article cannot be misused as "anti semites
ammunition".
By excerpting Czernowitz/Bukovina related articles from the huge archives of
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA)
http://www.jta.org/jta-archive/archive-page
Florence facilitated our discussion and I'm grateful for that. Warmest
wishes to all of you!
