My great aunt and great uncle, Leah and Rabbi Meshulam Rath (ultra orthodox chief rabbi of Cz since 1936) were in Chernowitz when the Russian invaded.
Her son Schmelke (Rubin-Jolles) was caught on the street selling shoelaces (so that he could buy some food for the house)....
He was sent by the Russians to Siberia and didn't get out until 1949 or so.
His mother Leah and her husband Reb Meshulam were apparently snuck out of Chernowitz during the Nazi occupation in 1943/4(?).
A Nazi officer was bribed (by Leah's brother Rabbi Rubin of Campulung, then living in Bucharest) and they put the Rath's on a German military truck which took them from Cz to Bucharest.
It is said that after Rabbi Rath's arrival a reception was held in the Malbim Shul in Bucharest and he spoke for over 5 hours.
The Rath's made it to Israel in the summer of '44 and lives first in Jerusalem and later in Bnei Braq.
In Israel he served as the head of the Rabbinical court of the chief Rabbinate.
