Wo needs old Jewish cemeteries ?
We do , to prove our old time Czernowitz tradition.
For us to know . For all to know.
The Alte Shil was founded in 1756 .
But Jews were among the first settlers in the 15 th century .
The old Jewish cemetery which closed down in 1860
     was such a link .
       Now it's gone.
       The missing link.

Hardy, it was not a Portugues worker. An Ukrainian who worked in Portugal.
All of those guys who helped us, work in the nearby textile factory. They
were extraordinary friendly. It was also interesting to observe how some
people know nothimg and other people know much. Some people whom we asked
had never heared about a Jewish cemetery. One of them asked another one, who
said 'of course here are Jewish headstones, didn't you know'. The last one
was the one who took the initiative to help us.
