Israel being an immigrant state has newspapers in many languages among them
German. The German newspaper my parents subscribed to was " Yediot
Khadashot" - ("New News"). My father used to sit after breakfast in the
public garden near their home on the "Carmel" neighborhood in Haifa and read
the paper. One day he was approached by another elderly man who said to my
father in German: "You must be a Czernowitzer" My father asked the man how
he knew - The man answered: " I'm a German born Jew. When we arrived to then
Palestine there was no German newspaper, so we started reading the English
paper - "Jerusalem Post", and we are still reading it nowadays. It is my
observation that the only people reading the " Yediot Khadashot" are
Bukowiner originated, because the German originated "Yekes" read the English
" Jerusalem Post"".

It was important for the Chernowitzers to emphasize their proficiency
in German because they saw themselves as German speaking Bukoviners
not as Romanians or Ukrainians or Polish. For years in Romania and
later in Israel when the Members of the Hebronia met at our house they
only talked in German (they were all fluent in Romanian Hebrew etc)
They read German books and we had " Die Stimme '' until my Father
passed away.
