This has been a very interesting discussion and I'm very glad Hardy brought it up. I'm reading here what I saw in my 40 years of traveling around the world (after 1966). German Jews always acting superior to other Jews and keeping separate. This might be a form of insecurity (cheap psychology) or because so many considered the Germans to be elite. What fascinated me every time is how this could be after the Holocaust. It's good to know many languages but to take a special pride in knowing German is what's fascinating to me. I was always happy I learned Spanish because it was very helpful in NYC. Maybe it's just me....

 Hello Judith,
In the 1880s and 1890s many Jews did not speak
German.I have a journal written by my grandfather
in which he describes his youth. His parents and
he had moved to Czernowitz in 1880 from a small
town in Maramures. They spoke only Yiddish
 and possibly Hungarian and Ruthenian.My
grandfather very badly wanted to learn German. A student at
the universitywho was a lodger of my great
grandparents, started to teach my grandfather
German, but when his mother discovered my
grandfather studying the German Grammar book, she
took it from him and tore it to pieces.
He did eventually learn German and even spelled
 it correctly.
