              Mordecai, of course it was not Williams choice,
   But a Desire tram line existed in New Orleans,
    I would have left the English" Desire "even in the German title.
     But it has a symbolic significance so he chose Sehnsucht
      as best describing the situation.

Dear Hardy,

I wonder whether Williams chose - or even agreed to the choice of - the
particular German word Sehnsucht for the translation of Desire in his oevre.
It may have been just the decision of the German translator who did not want
to use the provocative word Begierde - or Lust - which is the theme of the
play,
