Sehnsucht - includes "sehnen" and "süchtig sein" - longing and being addicted to. It is an elegiac, self-destroying sadness. In her last and only letter from "Cariera de la pietra" Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger talked about the "unsagbar süßen Weh" she is yearning for - "the sweet pain beyond words". "Sehnsucht" is comparable to "Empfindsamkeit" or "Angst" - an amalgam of  sentiments.

Mordecai, of course it was not Williams choice,
But a Desire tram line existed in New Orleans,
I would have left the English" Desire "even in the German title.
But it has a symbolic significance so he chose Sehnsucht
as best describing the situation.
