Hardy...
Ha, I had exactly the same reaction like you! But from Wikipedia I learned: "A normal school is a school created to train high school graduates to be teachers. Its purpose is to establish teaching standards or norms, hence its name. Most such schools are now called teachers' colleges."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_school
Re "anormal school": My late father mentioned for instance in his (German) memoirs: "Quite a lot was frightening to me, starting with Prof. Hodl's [Dr. Adam Hodel] cuts from his student hood in his face through to the snobbish and affected behavior of my wealthier classmates." Same teacher, but a different point of view: Prof. Zvi Yavetz characterized Dr. Adam Hodel, the (German) deputy director of the Private Secondary School "Emanuel Grigorovitza" as most helpful for many Jewish students. School days!
Warmest wishes!
