Nitra (Hungarian: Nyitra, pronounced exactly the same) in Slovakia is not particularly close to the Hungarian border and hasn't been Hungarian (i.e. hasn't belonged to a Hungarian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as all of Slovakia did) since the Empire was broken up and Czechoslovakia created in 1918; to call it "the Hungarian city of Nitra" is taking a very strong Hungarian irredentist view! (I.e. joining forces with the abominable Jobbik.)

It's about halfway between Slovak capital Bratislava (Pressburg / Prešpurok) and the rather lovely central Slovak small city of Banska Bystrica, where the uprising originated against the Nazi-collaborationist clerical-fascist regime of Father Tiso, and where there's an excellent Museum of the Slovak National Uprising (really: 'Museum of the Slovak WWII Experience') with a moving memorial outside it, festooned with fresh flowers, to Slovak victims of the Shoah.

Nitra was once the home of more than 4000 Jews. While my family's traditional home (restored to us in 1996) is in Olomouc, not at all far away in eastern Czechia (Moravia), I don't think we knew anyone from Nitra. My father's grandmother and my mother's great-grandmother were 'Hungarian' in some sense from the Austro-Hungarian era; I don't know exactly where either was born.

Does anybody in the list have family from the Hungarian city of Nitra
(today in Slovakia)?
