I was in Czernowitz last week and prayed one morning in the now only
functioning synagogue, led by Rabbi Mendel Glitzenstein, at Sadovskogo
Street b. 11. I got into conversation with one of the regulars there who
told me how difficult things are economically. His wife works away from
home on a 12 hour on / 12 off shift job. He is working part time and
looking after their children. He hopes to get full time employment soon in
Czernowitz so that his wife can come home. No, I did not ask why she is
away or in any other way pry. I simply put my hand in my pocket and gave
him a reasonable sum of money. He was overwhelmed and didn't want to accept
it.
Sylvia asks "Is there anything we can do to help?". Frankly that is what
can be done. Send whatever money you can. I have met Rabbi Glitzenstein
several times and believe he is honest and highly devoted to the Jews of
Czernowitz. He can be reached at chabadcv_at_gmail.com. His communal complex
houses, aside of the synagogue, a kindergarten, a school and a kitchen that
provides hot meals. I know that he also distributes clothing several times
a year and helps children in the public schools to get on in life through
after school groups.
I am not a member of the Chabad group and sometimes find them a little
pushy but I believe that Rabbi Mendel is a very special person whose
commitment and drive are quite outstanding.
