I can tell that the name is "Vinete" in singular and plural, because while
living in Bucharest there were vegetable peddlers called "Olteni" (from the
district of Oltenia) who carried their merchandise in two baskets on a yoke
and call out the name of what they had to offer. Till this day "Vinete" is
one of my favorite vegetables.

Vinete is Rumanian for the color purple of the plant.
Always used in plural. ?
Aubergine in German from French.
In the west not in the cookbook for humans.
Very tasty though,
Hardy
