As far as I remember the Friedmann was open at lunch time too.
And it was well known for fish. There was an incident that I often heard
in my childhood
that involved my parents and their friends. They had some party at the
Friedmann restaurant with other 3 pairs of friends (I think their double
foursome of poker that played at home but also sometimes went out together
for lunch or dinner).
My mother was served fish and after tasting it said to my father: "Adolf
der Fisch ist nicht gut,
bitte iss du ihn." Meaning litterally:"the fish is not good please do eat
it". That was of course met by laughter all around.
What she said she meant and explained afterwards for years, was that she
had a very touchy stomach and my father was well known for eating
everything at that time . And of course it was not very polite to send back
to the kitchen food at Friedmann's.
The phrase was brought up by my father during many years whenever he had
some quarrel with her, and the duality of its meaning commented in the
family a lot of times. It is even now used by my children and grandchildren
(in German) whenever the occasion to comment on dubious cooking comes up.
Grandma's quasi official statement at Friedmann's has become anecdotal for
at least 4 generations.
