Growing up in Chernowitz even as late as in 50s and 60s I new well not to speak Yiddish for secret.
In our building for example (Now Soborna 5) one of the three non-Jewish families, the guy was a plumber, pan Seedack, spoke perfect Yiddish. If he spoke behind your back You would think it was a Jewish guy talking. But he was a bukoviner. My friend Vladimir Lyubimov, who still lives there, a son of a Soviet officer can get by with his Yiddish when needed.
