About 25 years ago I knew a gentle old Pole, a Spiritualist who could see not only spirits but people's auras, who was night-watchman at an office I worked at on an industrial estate near Wokingham, near Reading west of London. He spoke perfect southern (Polish-Carpathian) Yiddish, despite being entirely an ethnic Pole of Catholic background. I don't think 'Yiddish as a secret language' had very much potential.

And less than an hour away, they were doing a similar thing if you
weren't poor. They were learning Polish to deal with the locals,
learning German to talk and read the "elite's" language, and learning
Yiddish, the mother tongue, to talk to each other. And since the
Poles and Germans didn't speak Yiddish, it was also a way of talking
behind the backs of both while in front of them.
