I only met Hedwig once, when I visited Haifa and she invited me to stay with
her. Our only connection was this list, which I had joined after visiting
CZ. She invited other list folks for me to meet, cooked us dinner, climbed
a ladder to take down some books from an upper shelf to show me, and
insisted that I sleep in her bed while she slept on the couch. My protests
were to no avail.
She made a big impression on me, and I will never forget her.

Condolences to Hedwig's family and friends.
Hedwig Brenner is an extraordinary woman who will always be near to us
through her stories and memories, her books, her recipes, her good humour,
and her immense energy.
She is my role model and I love her for that.
Sincerely,

Czernowitzers, dear friends,
We are faced with an irreplaceable loss. I am deeply shocked and it is my
sad duty to announce the sudden loss of Hedwig Brenner, our friend and
Grande Dame of Czernowitz, who passed away today at the age of 98 years.
Only yesterday Hedwig addressed to all of us a short message and she
concluded with the words "Der Mensch denkt, Gott lenkt!" [Man proposes, God
disposes!] - Hedwig will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are
with her family and friends.
