I only witnessed the Russian soldiers entering the city in 1944.
I do not remember the tank, but I remember soldiers on trucks
Throwing candy to the children on the sidewalk and calling to us,
"Malchic", "Dyevushka", the first Russian words I learned.
Even though I was not yet seven years old at the time,
I think that I had a good idea of the significance of the event
And not till November 1947, when the UN decided on the partition of Palestine,
Did I experience the same sort of joy and elation for a political event.
