Let me illustrate your memories by drawing your attention to the "Three 'Liberations' of Czernowitz?!"
http://czernowitz.blogspot.de/2009/09/three-liberations-of-czernowitz.html
on June 28, 1940 by the Soviets,
on July 5, 1941 by the Romanians,
on March 28, 1944 by the Soviets again,
but please pay attention to the quotation marks for the term "Liberations". Only the third one in 1944 is thought to be a real liberation, at least for the Jews, who succeeded to survive the Holocaust.
It's chracteristic for the continuing distortion of history that from these three short video clips, which I released also on YouTube, it's exactly this third one, which provoked so many incensed and offensive comments, that I had to eliminate the comment option.

Not only do I remember the event it to have happened one week before, =
there is also the announcement in the Russian Army newspaper from the =
31.03.1944 Prikaz Verhovnovo Glavnokomanduishcea tov.Stalina to the =
first Ukrainian Army thanking them for liberating the town. On the =
30.03.44 accordingly there was an artillery salve at 20.00 hours in =
Moskau to celebrate the event.=20
