According to our family geaneology based on oral tradition, the Wiznitzer
Rebbe (whose own surname was/is Hager) gave Litman Buller of Waszkoutz am
Cheremosh (a town located between Czernowitz and Wiznitz, today called
Vashkivtsi) the surname Wiznitzer in the 19th century. This was
supposedly done as a reward for a favor Litman had done for the Rebbe. It
was at a time when rabbis by local custom often assigned surnames to comply
with the Austrian legal requirement when they registered births, deaths and
marriages with local authorities. I have not heard that surnames were
=E2=80=9Cbought=E2=80=9D from civil authorities in this part of Bukovina. =
Although we have
not found registries of that era, we do have evidence in the Austrian land
and tax records of 1854 (located in Suceava, Romania) that Litman, one of
his sons, and at least one Buller owned property in Waszkoutz. Based on
our history, I am a 6th generation Wiznitzer.
