Hi all.
A very common practice among East European religious Jews was to add a significant fore name to existing ones, such as Chaim (life) to a dangerously sick person, in the belief that this would contribute to his or her recovery. Thus could support the supposition that in certain rare cases the family name would be changed. in case some sickness would repeat in the family - because of genetic reasons (there were many marriages of cousins).or en environmental. It should be noted that the particular Yiddish pronunciation was chosen and not the German (Neugeborn).
This type of spelling occurred also in our extended family - Lapidus (in Slavic areas) or Lapides (in Austro-Hungarian areas) for the Hebrew Lapidot chosen by our ancestors, at the end of the 18th or start of the 19 th century. In my particular case, we were able to trace it back to the 1840-s (the grandfather of my father)
