Jeff,
You could try getting tested by 23andMe, which is more informative
than the other testing services - and then upload your results to
GedMatch, which is free and accepts uploads from all the major DNA
testing services. You can also upload your 23andMe results to the
website of another service, ftdna - for $40, they will add your
information to their database. Both 23andMe and ftdna appear to have
very large databases of Ashkenazic Jews who have had themselves
tested.
Through 23andMe and Gedmatch, I have found quite a number of long-lost
branches of my grandparents' relatives, including some born in
Czernowitz and now living in the U.S., whose last name is the same as
my Czernowitz great-grandmother's.
On another side of my father's family, I found a previously unknown
cousin who recognized his mother and grandmother in the 100+ year old
unidentified photo I sent him. And there are many other stories -
including finding the genetic progenitors of several sets of adopted
adults who are related to my cousins (but not to me).
Of course, the many resources suggested by Bruce Reisch are the
starting point, with genetic testing as a possibly useful adjunct.
If you are looking for relatives, it is most helpful to have
historical information that allows you to understand how you might be
related to the people whom you may find on the genetic testing sites.
Good luck with your research -
Marilyn Gelber
