Dear all,
I love the recent corrections and insights regarding the Notable Czernowitzers chart. It's still in skeletal form and needs to be fleshed out considerably.
That said, there might be a small misconception about the chart's original intent -- The actual title is "Notable Czernowitz Residents" and was meant to be an index of sorts about people who at one time or another have called Czernowitz home, NOT necessarily that they were born there. The column "Era" is for lifespan (birth and death) information, and there is also a column called "Years in Czernowitz." The years in that column will not necessarily match the "Era" column. Information that gives more background or details can go in the notes column.
Maybe we can add a line under the title stating:
"This chart is about people who at one time or another have called Czernowitz home, but were NOT necessarily born there. Please help us fill in the gaps on the Czernowitz connections for these notable people."
Thank you to everyone for expanding and improving the information!
Jane Reifer

Subject: [Cz-L] Notable Czernowitzers
Dear all,
Looking at this database, whicH seems to me a bit incomplete, I would like to add or/and correct some infos:
Otto Preminger - colleague of my father in junior school, born in Wiznitz, but he always maintained he was born in Vienna, where he moved with his family while still young. He died in 1986, in the US. Most famous films: Witness of the prosecution, Exodus.
E.G. Robinson - he was born in Bucharest according to Wikipedia etc.
Maybe he was not proud of being born in a smaller town or even village, who knows exactly?
L.E. Franzos - born in Czortków, Galicia, 1848-1904. He lived for a few years in Czernowitz, but not being able to continue his studies, he went to Vienna and Prague, later in Berlin where he is buried at the Weissensee Cemetery.
F. Kiesler - a famous architect, together with a colleague he built the phantastic "Shrine of the Book" in Jerusalem.
Erich Roll - 1907-2005 - born in Novoselyzja, studied in Czernowitz and later England, but spent most of his life in the U.K.
Edwin. R. Gold - 1905-1990 Immunologist , aforerunner in his field wrote the first book on immunology in Romania in 1957, friend and colleagueof Erwin Chargaff.
Selma Merbaum - maybe her name can be changed from Meerbaum-Eisinger to Merbaum, according to the latest information by Marion Tauschwitz.
Whoever from the List has more information on this database, they are welcome to supply it.
