I was last in Chernivtsi - Czernowitz in July of 2017.
My impressions of the city are quite different from the ones of Anita Brush.
Czernowitz is still an architectural gem, even though some buildings look neglected
And the roads need repair. The best way to get to Chernivtsi, is by flying to Lviv,
Which has a good modern airport and connections to Vienna and Munich
And have a driver from Chernivtsi pick you up at the Lviv airport
And drive you to your hotel in Chernivtsi. The cost of this drive is about $80
And you have to make the arrangements via a translator/travel guide in Chernivtsi.
The best and most convenient hotel in town is the Allure Inn, on the central square.
It has all the modern amenities and is clean and comfortable and by European or American
Standards, quite inexpensive. The staff speak English and are friendly and very helpful.
It is possible to contact the hotel on the Internet.
there are plenty of restaurants, serving very good food and taxis will take you anywhere in town
For a reasonable fare.
Staying in town two or three days, is probably sufficient to see the main sights,
staying an extra day will allow one to visit Tzetzina, Sadagura or any one of a number of
Nearby villages.
If you plan to visit houses or apartments in which your relatives lived, do this with a local
Translator / guide. I have found that the current inhabitants of the buildings, or apartments
I wanted to visit were very accommodating, others have sometimes been less willingly received.
Consider what might be your own attitude, if a perfect stranger, wanted to come into your home.
Best regards,
Mimi
