It is my sad duty to inform you that Edgar Hilsenrath passed away yesterday,
on December 30, 2018. Fellow member Mark Wiznitzer drew our attention to an
extensive obituary released (preliminarily in German language) at Edgar

For all of us to whom books mean so very much, to whom books are absolutely
essential for life, it will take us time to totally comprehend this loss. I
met Edgar Hilsenrath once during one of his readings in Germany and we had a
short conversation on our common Jewish Bukovinian roots. I shared with him
much more than our common first name. May his memory be a blessing!
