Most descendants do not know this
My father was born Schapira because his father’s parents were only married religiously. He came to this country after being born in Vienna and having grown up in Czernowitz in 1952 as schapira. His father was from Brezhany. I was born schapira in 1953. When my parents were naturalized my father changed the name to Winters ( originally Winter, but adding the s because a cousin of his did). This I have two US birth certificates
