Dear Regine,

Benjamin's statement in combination with Christian's explanation cover the full story on "recte" and "false" respectively for Jewish names in former Austro-Hungary. That's perfect, but did you check already the "Jewish Bukovina Sources for Genealogical and Family History Research"

https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/sadgura/ReischToronto.html

and especially the genealogical search engines provided by

https://czernowitz.geneasearch.net/index.php
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/search/
https://genealogyindexer.org

as well as the newspapers online archives

http://anno.onb.ac.at
https://www.difmoe.eu/d/

which will provide a wealth of information to you?! I do hope these additional data will be helpful to you.

Warmest wishes and please "stay tuned" for our Czernowitz-L Discussion Group!

Edgar Hauster

Dear Regine,

'recte' appears to be an Austrian practice in family names, common in Galicia and other places. From an article by Wolf-Erich Eckstein on Jewish genealogy in Austria (http://hbjk.sbg.ac.at/kapitel/genealogische-spurensuche-juedische-genealogie-in-oesterreich/) I learned the following:

Many persons born there (Galicia) are considered illegitimate, many of whom are mentioned under both the surname of the father and the mother, sometimes in the form "(surname of the father) recte (surname of the mother)" or vice versa with "false ", occasionally also first under the surname of the father, later corrected in the surname of the mother.

Best wishes,
Christian

Hallo out there. I am brand new to the list - and to any Czernowitz
site/blog/research project.

My late father was born in Czernowitz, as were his brothers and parents -
don't know anything about further removed generations.

Having just returned from a visit of Transnistrien and Czernowitz with the
Israeli 'association of Bukoviners' I would love to find out more and
receive the answer to an unresolved mystery:

My father's family goes under two different but somehow connected family
names FINGER recte STURM.

What does recte stand for? My father's older brother went by the name of
FINGER only. My father had papers using one name of the other but later
"chose" the name STURM. His younger brother apparently never carried the
name FINGER.

My grandfather's name was WOLF FINGER recte STURM my grandmother's maiden
name was GOTTLIEB (Pepi)

I would greatly appreciate your input. Iwill be grateful for any help you can give a total beginner.

Regards,

Regine
